Aromatherapy in daily life

Essential oils would have to be one of the loveliest and simplest ways to incorporate self-care into daily life. I developed my interest in aromatherapy from my mum, who started using oil blends in the 90s. Whether it was to alleviate cold and flu symptoms with a soothing rub, or adding a few drops in the oil burner to create a beautiful fragrance (and mood) throughout the house, essential oils were an important part of her daily life.

I remember one Christmas Day lunch, there was a bit of a distinct ‘mood’ in the house. We had relatives and family friends over, and for one reason or another Christmas cheer was not in abundance! So Mum put a few drops of uplifting oils into the burner, and within ten minutes the mood had lifted – it was dramatically noticeable. From that day forward I believed in the powerful effects of essential oils.

Now that I am an adult myself, I use use aromatherapy to help me prepare for the day, to inspire and uplift, and to promote peaceful sleep.

One of the favourite parts of my day is massaging in oils to my skin after my morning shower. It’s become something of a ritual for me – I highly recommend making it part of your morning ritual, even if you have only five minutes to spare!

Rather than using your regular body moisturiser, dress your skin with a few drops of your favourite essential oils mixed with a carrier oil. I use sweet almond oil as my base, but you can use anything from cold-pressed olive to apricot kernel or coconut.

You can either place a drop each of two to three oils into your carrier oil, or choose a delicious blend already prepared by an aromatherapist. I really like In Essence, one of the original essential oil companies in Australia and a brand I trust for the purity and quality of the oils. Mum only used their oils, and you know what they say – mum knows best!

Lately I’ve been using the In Essence ‘Motivation’ blend, a mix of orange, eucalyptus, lemongrass, peppermint and cardamon. It is uplifting and great for promoting inspiration and direction – but if you’re pregnant please stay away from this blend as a topical application (eucalyptus, lemongrass and peppermint oils are considered contraindications during pregnancy).

Last week my very dear friend Carolina gave me a gorgeous Autumn Earth blend from Sacred Art of Beauty – a little potion of ‘Autumn flowers, barks, fruit and herbs’. I have been using it in place of the Motivation blend and I can’t get enough of it! It says that it is balancing and grounding, and I couldn’t agree more. Exactly what the naturopath ordered!

So, with Sunday afternoon well and truly upon us, I thought I would share some morning blends below to help beat the Monday morning blues tomorrow. I hope you enjoy this pampering and nurturing daily ritual as much as me!

To promote focus, add 1-2 drops of basil, 1-2 drops bergamot, 1 drop black pepper to 10ml of carrier oil and massage into skin.

For enthusiasm (this blend not recommended for pregnant women), add 1 drop each of orange, lemon, ylang ylang, geranium and mandarin to 10ml of carrier oil and massage into skin.
