Friendship

Last night C & I had an impromptu dinner in Paddington, on our way home from the opening of Georgina Hooper’s exhibition (more on this here).

We stopped in at Grappino, a contemporary little Italian restaurant that has big-arsed tables and chairs for two (don’t you just loathe little tables and squishy chairs when you’re at dinner? You need room to kinda just sit back and relax, you know?)

While the food was awesome and jam-packed with garlic goodness (I’m keeping the vampires away today, but it was worth it) and the staff were awesome beyond words, it was a table of six women that really made my night.

Dressed in matching red berets and fabulous style, they were celebrating the 60th Birthday of one of the women, who ‘dabbles in theatre’ according to one of the restaurant staff, also a good friend of the Birthday girl. Our lady of honour skipped the red beret for the night and opted for a French sea-captain’s cap, very appropriate I think.

As I sat there looking at these women, who were laughing and just enjoying the company of good friends, I thought of my own very dear ‘sisters’ who have been with me though thick and thin. Even though some of us are now married or in long-term relationships and we love our partners dearly, sometimes there is nothing quite like the bond shared with a girl buddy to help you get through this crazy thing called life – the dark times and the light.

When you lose people who you love in life, you realise even more how important true friendship is. You must cherish it and always let your friends know how much they mean to you – even if it’s just a text saying HI.

So, this one goes out to my friends and soul-sisters – you know who you are. Thank you for being my friend. And yes, we’ll be having a French-themed dinner in an Italian restaurant for my 60th. So get ready to party!

Thank you for being a friend

Travel down the road and back again

Your heart is true, you’re a pal and a confidant

And if you threw a party, invited everyone you knew

You would see the biggest gift would be from me

And the card attached would say

Thank you for being a friend

Hey Mel, I’ve just been to a 60th today for a dear, dear friend. She is one of a group of 8 of us who try to meet once a year for a catch-up. We met in Townsville about 40 years ago. And you’re right – it is a blessing to have such wonderful friends who have shared the fun, the joy, the tears and everything in between with you! I enjoyed your musings from last night and I look forward to reading more. Judith x

  2. Hi Judith! Ha, what perfect timing for my post – I hope you and your friends shared many a laugh at her 60th. How special the eight of you still meet up once a year too – I think that’s the beauty of true friends. You can see each other once a year or once every ten years and it’s just like yesterday, because you’re always in one another’s thoughts 🙂 Mel x
